Welcome to the Mechanicville Stillwater Area

The Mechanicville-Stillwater Area, encompassing 65 square miles and located in the southeast corner of Saratoga County, is suburban in nature with many of the conveniences of an urban area. It is located on the banks of the Hudson River, seven miles north of Troy and fifteen miles north of New York’s Capitol Albany.

Saratoga County is just 150 miles from Boston, New York City and Montreal. Servicing 50-percent of the combined U.S.-Canadian population, this strategic location is served by an enhanced ground transportation system, making Saratoga County uniquely suited for the economics of “just-in-time production.” Convenient to a superior multimodal network of highway, rail, air, and inland port facilities allows Saratoga County easy access to European markets.

Saratoga County is a thriving business community with fine dining and world-class entertainment. Whether it is hiking or camping, downhill skiing or boating, Saratoga County is only minutes away from the best recreational facilities in the Northeast. Saratoga County possesses the majestic Adirondack Mountains and charming Saratoga Springs while being only a short distance from Lake George and the Green Mountains of Vermont.

City of Mechanicville

Mechanicville, incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1915, is the nucleus of this suburban complex, which includes parts of the towns of Malta, Halfmoon, Stillwater, and Waterford in Saratoga County; and Schaghticoke in Rensselaer County.

The potential of Mechanicville’s business and industry is growing and expanding. Modern highways connect with nearby superhighways, such as the NYS Thruway and the Massachusetts Turnpike. Albany International Airport is a few miles away as are several smaller airports serving the area.

Town of Stillwater

Stillwater was created in 1788 as a “Mother Town”. In 1709 Colonel Peter Schuyler erected Fort Ingoldsby within the present village limits. The Village of Stillwater was incorporated in 1816. It was the site of the ferry across the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War. Advent of the Champlain Canal in 1823 resulted in development of a commercial and industrial center.

The Town of Stillwater is home of “the turning point of the American Revolution.” The battle of Freeman’s farm and the battle of Bemis Heights fought here in 1777 paved the way for freedom and set the stage for the settlement of our beautiful township along the banks of the mighty and noble Hudson River. Stillwater is a community rich in history with a quaint warm environment and we welcome you to visit us.

Saratoga Lake

Saratoga Lake, a popular tourist attraction, is also located in the Town of Stillwater. You will find many race and golf enthusiasts visiting this lake during the Saratoga Racing Season. On its southern shore was the famed “White Sulphur Springs” Hotel where Jack Dempsey trained for the world heavyweight boxing championship.

Battle of Saratoga

The early history of the area includes folklore on the local Indian tribes and the founding of our Nation. Originally an integral part of the Indian hunting grounds, the geography later became a strategic military route and the site of the Battle of Saratoga during the Revolutionary War.

Generals Gates, Arnold, Schuyler and Burgoyne all were involved in this historic battle known as the turning point of the war.
